Housing Facts About Chihuahua Population: 671, 790 Pronounced: Chi-Wau-Wah Chihuahua occupies an area of 244,938 square kilometers, making it the largest state in Mexico (nearly 13% of Mexico’s total land space). It is located south of Texas, and borders Sonora and Durango to the west and Coahuila to the east. The climate is dry to semi-arid with regular rainfall during summer and temperatures ranging from extremely hot to extremely cold. Chihuahua is well known for the Copper Canyon, which is almost 300 feet deeper than the Grand Canyon. Also Chihuahua is famous for cattle breeding, apple crops and dairy products. Chihuahua City was officially founded at the start of the eighteenth century, and its historic buildings are scattered around the busy downtown area. Chihuahua's atmosphere is truly Mexican and deeply patriotic, which adds remarkably to its sense of history. Its remoteness from the traditional colonial heartland means that it hosts fewer tourists than its colonial counterparts. How to Get There By Car: Driving to Chihuahua City from Juarez at the southern border of the United States takes about 4 hours on Toll Road 45. By Bus: Buses run all day, every day from Juarez on the US-Mexican border directly to Chihuahua City. Chihuahua City is a common destination on many national bus routes because it offers convenient accessibility to many other parts of the country. There are also regular buses to destinations in the U.S. By Plane: Plan to fly from the United States into the Mexico City International Airport. Airport pick-ups are offered to exchange students or visiting professors. If such arrangements are not made, few alternatives exist. Currency Exchange Banks with ATM machines can be found throughout Chihuahua City. During business hours, the “Casas de Cambio” (banks) will buy traveler's checks or cash. Things to Do
