Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UAHC) is one of the nation's leading public universities. For more than fifty years, UACH has been evolving to meet the social, economic and technological demands of Chihuahua's ever-changing economy and community.

Housing

UACH does not provide student housing, but it is possible to rent an apartment or live with a host family. In fact, there are many apartments and houses near the university that can be rented. With plenty of supermarkets, restaurants, bookstores, laundry mats, etc., in the campus vicinity, students can find everything they need to live comfortably. Local services, such as security patrol, street lighting, a convenient highway system, telephone services, and cable, are first-class and cheaper than in other states in Mexico. Apartment-style housing is available for up to three exchange students per unit. Students usually have their own room in these fully-furnished apartments. Cooking utensils are provided, though many prefer to purchase meals at the student dining hall. Room and board rates depend on the arrangement between schools for exchange students.

Chihuahua occupies an area of 244,938 square kilometers, making it the largest state in Mexico (nearly 13% of Mexico’s total land space). It is located south of Texas, and borders Sonora and Durango to the west and Coahuila to the east. The climate is dry to semi-arid with regular rainfall during summer and temperatures ranging from extremely hot to extremely cold. Chihuahua is well known for the Copper Canyon, which is almost 300 feet deeper than the Grand Canyon. Also Chihuahua is famous for cattle breeding, apple crops and dairy products. Chihuahua City was officially founded at the start of the eighteenth century, and its historic buildings are scattered around the busy downtown area. Chihuahua's atmosphere is truly Mexican and deeply patriotic, which adds remarkably to its sense of history. Its remoteness from the traditional colonial heartland means that it hosts fewer tourists than its colonial counterparts.

How to Get There

By Car:

Driving to Chihuahua City from Juarez at the southern border of the United States takes about 4 hours on Toll Road 45.

By Bus:

Buses run all day, every day from Juarez on the US-Mexican border directly to Chihuahua City. Chihuahua City is a common destination on many national bus routes because it offers convenient accessibility to many other parts of the country. There are also regular buses to destinations in the U.S.

By Plane:

Plan to fly from the United States into the Mexico City International Airport. Airport pick-ups are offered to exchange students or visiting professors. If such arrangements are not made, few alternatives exist.

Currency Exchange

Banks with ATM machines can be found throughout Chihuahua City. During business hours, the “Casas de Cambio” (banks) will buy traveler's checks or cash.

Things to Do

For culture and entertainment enthusiasts, Chihuahua City offers bars, cafes, night clubs, theaters, museums and galleries. Several restaurants offering a rich variety of regional, national and international cuisine are the delight of locals. First-class movie theaters, bowling alleys and shopping malls are some of the facilities that can be found in Chihuahua City.

Only three hours southwest of Chihuahua City, adventurers can explore Copper Canyon. The entire Copper Canyon region comprises almost a third of the state. The Samalayuca Desert is only 300 km. north of the city. The sand dunes can be seen for almost 8 km along the highway, with high dunes only a few steps from the roadside. Although many parts of Mexico have deserts, very few of them are as arid and have hills of fine sand like this one.

Paquime ruins are about 300 km northwest of the capital city. Paquime was a pre-hispanic city, and its cultural influence can be felt throughout Chihuahua and Sonora, Mexico, as well as Arizona and New Mexico in the U.S.
